Famous lakes of Jodhpur: Kaylana and Balsamand


Jodhpur, a part of Western Rajasthan, has very few water bodies. But there are two wonderful lakes viz. Kaylana and Balsamand which are beautiful picnic spots. This article gives brief information about the two lakes which should be helpful for the domestic and international tourists visiting Jodhpur.

Rajasthan is largely a dry land with few surface water bodies like rivers, ponds and lakes. Especially the area of Western Rajasthan has mostly seen the water troubles in the past. Jodhpur too doesn't have many lakes and ponds like Udaipur. But there are couple of good lakes in the city which are hot picnic spots, especially during monsoon season. The two famous lakes of Jodhpur are Kaylana and Balsamand lake.

Kaylana Lake


It is a fresh water lake in Jodhpur. Majority of the city is supplied water through it. It is also a popular picnic spot for the local people.

History of Kaylana Lake


Kaylana is an artificial lake built by Pratap Singh in the year 1872. It lies 8 km to the west of Jodhpur. The lake gets the water from the Indira Gandhi canal. For years it has been the most important source of drinking water for the inhabitants of Jodhpur

The Kaylana Lake is a famous picnic spot of Jodhpur. The place is hugely popular during monsoon season. First of all it is away from the clamour of the city and amidst the natural surroundings. So it becomes a very nice place to get relaxed. Boating facility is available here and so the visitors can enjoy pedaling in the boats. There is a restaurant nearby where the tourists can have refreshments. The place is also popular among the people who love watching different kinds of birds. The tourists can also get a spectacular view of the sunset from this lake.

Balsamand Lake and Garden


Balsamand Lake is another very popular tourist destination of Jodhpur. The place consists of a lake, a beautiful palace and an exotic garden.

History of Balsamand Lake


It is one of the oldest lakes of Jodhpur. Balsamand Lake was constructed by Balak Rao Parihar in 1159 AD to address the water problem of Mandore. Much later the palace and the garden were established and this place served as a vacation point for the rulers. Today it is thronged by the tourists visiting Jodhpur.

The lake is surrounded by hills and lies almost a km away from the main road. The Balsamand Lake Palace is a heritage hotel now and is one of the popular ones in Rajasthan. The palace is made of red sandstone and is a fine piece of Rajput architecture. It was built by Maharaja Jaswant Singh I in the 17th Century. In its modern avatar, the palace has got all the necessary amenities along with a health spa. The palace has got lush green lawns and a rose garden. The place is also a popular destination for high end parties and different events.

The surroundings around the lake are very serene and the tourists trying to escape from the hustle bustle of the city would simply love spending time here.
