History of Mehrangarh

The fort was built by Rao Jodha, the founder of Jodhpur, in the year 1459. The literal meaning of the word Mehrangarh is 'fort of the sun'. The folklore says that the place originally belonged to a sage who cursed the place and consequently the initial construction failed. Thereafter human sacrifices were sought to counter the curse.
