Bhangarh is a town in the state of Rajasthan in India. It is almost 2 hours journey from Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan. It was established in the 17th century but was ruined and abandoned till the next century.
Bhangarh is famous because it is a ghost town. Recognition of this fact by the official government body adds to its popularity. ASI(Archaeological Survey of India) has put up a signboard almost 1 km away from Bhangarh fort; warning the tourists and local folks to stay away from it before sunrise and after sunset.
The story of a tantrik(wizard) and a beautiful princess(Ratnawati) is linked with this haunted town. According to the story the wizard was in love with Ratnawati. He expressed his love before Ratna but she did not pay heed to him. Mad with anger and rejection he spread his black magic on ratnawati’s fort and destroyed the whole town including him. Since then the town is in ruins.
There are mixed opinions about Bhangarh fort. Some say that they have witnessed the presence of the dead wizard, while others call it a myth.
Places to visit
The temples around the town are considered unscathed by the magic of wizard and hence safe from ghosts. Bandikui( an old town) and Abhaneri( a stepwell) can be added to the trip on bhangarh.
The history of Bhangarh is indeed interesting. I hope to go there sometime in future.
