Ghoomar- The Rajasthani Dance

Rajasthan’s cultural heritage is very vast. Besides royal palaces and huge forts it has a great variety of dances and Ghoomar dance is the most popular among the folks. It is a women’s dance and is performed at fairs and festivals. The royal ladies of Jaipur used to perform it on special occassions. The ghoomar dance has many characteristics of the bhil tribe, so, it is believed to have come from the bhils of Aravali.

Rajasthan may be considered dull and colourless because of Thar desert but the dullness fades off the minds when the dancers come on the centre stage in their vibrant coloured dresses, silver jewellery and bright makeup.

How the name stuck? - The dance got its name from the circular movement (ghoomna) of their broad ghaghras (long skirts worn by ladies in Rajasthan) .the ghaghras play a vital role in the dance. Hence heavily embroidered and mirrors and stones embedded ghaghras are worn by the performers. The ghaghras sway as per the tempo of the music. This dance may continue for hours or even for a whole night. All the dancers move in a circle in a synchronized manner. The rhythm of the dance is so overpowering that no one is left without being impressed.
