City Palace Jaipur
Jaipur is a famous city of Rajasthan, in India. It is also called pink city because in 1876, it was dressed pink to welcome Prince Albert and Queen Elizabeth II and the name stuck to it. Jaipur is a very famous tourist spot. It is known for its forts, palaces, stone jewellery, etc. Hawa Mahal, Amber Fort, Rambagh Palace, Jantar Mantar and City Palace are some of the major tourist attractions of Jaipur.
City Palace was originally built by Maharaja Jai Singh II and a lot of additions to the structure have been made after that also. The area covered by City Palace is around 1/7 of the total area of Jaipur. The architecture of city palace is a fusion of rajasthani and mughal styles. It is divided into many gardens, buildings and courtyards. There are two main entrances to the Palace, one is from the jaleb chowk and the other from the tripolia gate. The first hall, if entered from the tripolia gate, is mubarak mahal. It was built by Maharaja Madho Singh in the 19th century. A grand door from the mubarak mahal leads to the Diwan-E-Khas or the Hall of Private Audience. It is an open hall and is very much famed for two silver vessels which are in the Guiness Book of world records for being the largest in the world.
City Palace has a seven storied building which was called Chandra Mahal or the Moon Palace. It has separate name for each storey. At ground floor it has a museum which houses weapons, carpets, royal clothes etc. This museum was originally used for official purposes. But in the year 1959 Maharaja Sawai Man Singh declared it a museum to cherish the cultural heritage of his forefathers. In 1970 it was renamed as Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II from its earlier name “Jaipur Museum”. This museum attracts a major chunk of Indian tourists.
Hawa Mahal is also a part of City Palace complex but it stands at some distance from it.
